Maureen McGregor

Manager of E-activism and Marketing

Every summer I’ve vacationed with my family on the Jersey Shore. I moved around a bit growing up, so our beach house is where I’ve always felt most at home. When I was little, I thought the only things in the ocean were jelly fish, crabs, seaweed, shells and – okay, I’ll admit it – mermaids. It was overwhelming to learn of the wealth of marine life beneath the ocean surface and to imagine the species still waiting to be discovered in the unexplored depths.

I decided to use my aptitude for web work to help protect the places I care about. I spent three years on the web team at Greenpeace USA. While there, I worked on a range of issues like global warming, toxic pollution, forest destruction and – of course – ocean protection. I was lucky enough to spend a month on a Greenpeace ship and after that experience I knew I wanted to do ocean work full-time.

I joined Oceana as the manager of e-activism and marketing in 2006. I was impressed with Oceana’s string of victories (http://www.oceana.org/?id=598) and wanted to be a part of future ones. My job is to make sure our 300,000+ supporters worldwide are also a part of those victories, and that our number of "WaveMakers" keeps growing.

The best way to help protect the oceans is to stay informed on critical issues. If you’re not already signed up to our free e-newsletter, I hope you’ll do so now (http://takeaction.oceana.org/signUp.jsp). And if you ever have any ideas on ways to get others involved in our work, drop me a line at wavemaker@oceana.org.
