A tuna fattening pen in the Mediterranean Sea

In the MarViva Med's first two weeks at sea, Oceana photographer Keith Ellenbogen snapped these rarely-seen images of bluefin fattening pens. The tuna are caught by purse seiners at sea, then towed closer to shore to fatten in the cages. The European Union has ignored its own scientists' advice that bluefin tuna are teetering on the brink of extinction and continued to allow fishing of this heavily exploited species.
