Last Chance to Support the Ocean Fleet

In the famed Tokyo fish market, a single Bluefin tuna can fetch $100,000. This economic incentive drives hundreds of super-efficient purse seiner boats to overfish Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea. Fortunately, Oceana has used the Ranger catamaran to document the over-exploitation of bluefin tuna for the last three years and this summer the Marviva Med has joined the oceans conservation fleet.
Pleases show your support for these boats and their expeditions by donating now.
Scientists estimate that 15,000 tons is the maximum measure of bluefin tuna that can be sustainably caught each year; however, some 50,000 to 60,000 tons are swept from the Mediterranean each summer. Since 2006, Ranger has sailed the Mediterranean trying to identify the “pirate fishing” boats that ignore European Union regulations on fishing.
This summer, thanks to our joint project with the Marviva Foundation, Oceana is excited to scout the Mediterranean with the added help of the 42-meter research vessel Marviva Med. With the addition of the Marviva Med to the fleet, we can not only continue our work on bluefin tuna, but also expand our work identifying essential habitats that need protecting.
The fleet has been doubled to do more for protecting marine life, but now we need WaveMakers like you to do a little more to help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 for our on-the-water activities. We only need $2,440 more to hit the mark by our deadline is today. Both boats maintain international crews of concerned citizens who work tirelessly to protect our marine resources—please show your concern too by making a donation now.
