Hang On Tight
Which of these thing shouldn't you do with balloons?
(A) Celebrate a birthday
(B) Decorate at a carnival
(C) Feed them to whales
The answer is (C) but we do it helium balloons float to the ocean and get swallowed by whales!
Helium balloons! Big, bouncing bobing...Oop! One got away. There it goes, into the sky, getting smaller and smaller...until it's just a speck. Then you blink and it's gone.
Where do helium balloons go?
Off into out space?
Not quite.
Actually, when they lose their hellium, they come back to Earth and that can be a problem for birds and other animals.
DID YOU KNOW
O When a helium balloons are released, they are often blown by the wind into the ocean. Even if the sea is hundreds of miles away, ballons can still land there.
O The salt water in the ocean washes off a balloons's color, making it look clear.
O Sometimes sea creatures think balloons are food and eat them.
O Sea turtles, for example, eat jellyfish-which look and wiggle just like a clear balloon. if a turtle makes a mistake and eats a balloon. the balloon can block its stomach. So the turtle starves to death.
O Another hazard: Silver metallic balloons made out of Mylar sometimes escape from people's hands and get caught in power lines. Then they cause the power to go out for many people.
